Natural stones, explained

Formed by the earth over millions of years. Here is what makes natural diamonds and gemstones special, and how to choose one with confidence.

What is a natural stone?

A natural stone is a diamond or gemstone that formed deep within the earth through heat, pressure and time, and was then carefully mined, cut and polished. Every natural stone carries its own unique story: its colour, inclusions and character are a record of the conditions in which it grew, which is why no two are ever exactly alike.

Natural diamonds are made of pure carbon and rate 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Coloured gemstones such as sapphires, rubies and emeralds are formed from different minerals, giving each its distinctive colour and properties.

Natural diamonds

Natural diamonds are graded on the same 4Cs as lab-grown diamonds: cut, colour, clarity and carat. Because they are rarer, natural diamonds of similar quality are usually priced higher, and many people choose them for their heritage and rarity, or as a meaningful heirloom to pass down.

  • Rarity — formed naturally over millions of years, with no two stones the same.
  • Heritage — a timeless choice for engagement rings, anniversaries and heirloom pieces.
  • Certified — principal stones can be supplied with an independent grading report from IGI or GIA.

Natural coloured gemstones

Coloured gemstones bring personality to fine jewellery, whether as a centre stone or as accents alongside diamonds.

Sapphire

Best known in deep royal blue, sapphires also occur in pink, yellow, green and white. At 9 on the Mohs scale they are hard-wearing and ideal for everyday rings.

Ruby

The red variety of the same mineral as sapphire, prized for its rich, warm colour and long associated with passion and protection.

Emerald

A vivid green gemstone with a soft, velvety glow. Most emeralds have natural inclusions, often described as their “jardin” or garden, which are part of their character.

And more

From tanzanite and morganite to aquamarine and tourmaline, we can help you find a stone in the colour, size and budget that suits you.

Natural or lab-grown?

Both are beautiful, and both can be certified. Lab-grown diamonds offer exceptional value and size for your budget, while natural stones offer rarity and a story millions of years in the making. There is no wrong choice, only the one that feels right for you. Read our lab-grown diamond guide to compare.
